Invitation Not Instigation

“THE SPIRIT of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed and qualified me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison and of the eyes to those who are bound.”                                                                                  Isaiah 61:1 (Amp)

The Pharisees again, as always, laid a trap for Jesus to stumble into.  Ever wanting to see Jesus fail;  their failure was to not first look within themselves before casting blame. ( see: Matthew 22:18;  Mark 2:8 )

Read: Luke 14:1-24

I. v.1-6  The Scene Is Set   False Piety  ( see: Luke 11:39-52 )

*   They baited Jesus; deliberately planted the diseased (dropsy)  man to see if He would break the Sabbath law and heal him.  They were caught in their scheme and tension was in the air!  ( Love Thy Neighbor )

II. v. 7-14  With God, The Way Up Is Down

Proverbs 25: 6,7 invitation is better than expulsion

Proverbs 16:18,19  self pride proceeds failure

Proverbs 29:23  humility is preferred over pride

Matthew 18:3,4  child like spirit is most acceptable to God

*  Extend Christ like compassion and humility without any prejudice

III.  v.15-24  Motives Matter   False  Confidence

*  Their sincerity was questioned by Jesus

Luke 18:9-14  Jesus looks upon the heart

*  Obvious excuses are not acceptable to the Lords call

*  Jesus extends His mercy to ALL  who will receive it !

By this time a lot of men and women of doubtful reputation were hanging around Jesus, listening intently. The Pharisees and religion scholars were not pleased, not at all pleased. They growled, "He takes in sinners and eats meals with them, treating them like old friends."                                                                                                                                                                                                             Luke 15:1,2 (Msg)

“People will come from all directions and sit down to feast in God's kingdom.  There the ones who are now least important will be the most important, and those who are now most important will be least important.”         Luke 13:29 ,30 (CEV)
