Honoring Mothers

“Honor your father and your mother, so your life may be long in the land the Lord your God gives you.”  Exodus 20:12 (NLV)

It seems that we live in an age of disrespect today.

Youth is glorified and old age is something to avoid at all cost .

Read:  Exodus 1:15-2:10

I.  The honor you give is the honor you receive
Exodus 1:15-22   “Moses” means ‘taken out’
* Pharaoh ordered all the Hebrew children to be drowned
* God used Moses to take a whole nation out of slavery in
Egypt
* The pursuing Egyptians all drowned in the Red Sea

II.  A good mother is a priestly mother
Exodus 2:1-10  Moses was hidden in the bulrushes
*  Baby Moses was born of Levite parents-  the tribe of priests
* God protects the priestly family
* Moses’ mother not only got him back, but got paid to nurture him
* He had a mother who did not give up on him-  trusted God’s will

III.  A good mother has a spirit of perseverance
I Samuel 1:9-18, 20, 27, 28  Though barren, Elkanah loved Hanna
* Hanna had a heart of perseverance and prayer
* She had a heart of love, a heart of caring, and a nurturing heart too

IV.   A good mother is one who teaches her children
2 Timothy 1:5, 7 Eunice had great faith, grandma Lois also
* Each one of need to be mentored and taught
* We need to be taught what the really important things are
* Faith is to be passed down to our children and grandchildren
* Mothers have the unique ability to demonstrate God’s grace

“Mothers write on the hearts of their children
what the rough hand of the world cannot erase”
